Meaningful Use Collaboration
Everyone is talking about Meaningful Use.
Everyone is getting ready for Meaningful Use.
Everyone wants funding associated with Meaningful Use.
So what is Meaningful Use exactly, and why are there so
many conflicting opinions and confusion about what needs
to be done. Much of this confusion is that
information is coming from multiple sources and each
source has their own interpretation that is most likely
favorable to their own needs. If you speak to
software vendors they have their own view, the same is
true for healthcare associations, government
organizations, advisories boards and healthcare news
organizations. Politically, technically and
operationally it is a hot topic. Even
consultancies, like ourselves, have varying viewpoints.
The reality is that Meaningful Use is primarily made
up of three elements. They are:
- Implement “certified” EHR technology
- Modification of clinical and operational
processes to “meaningfully use” the software
- Securely report, integrate and share clinical
data across the extended healthcare community
The three elements look straightforward, but in fact,
they are hard. Executive sponsorship and alignment
is key to defining a strategy and ultimately making your
organization a meaningful user of clinical technology.
Executive involvement is imperative from clinical,
financial, operational and information technology
leaders in your organization. Meeting Meaningful
Use objectives will touch every facet of your
organization. While the implementation of the
enterprise clinical software will by itself be a
challenge, roles will change, processes will change, and
extensive training will be required.
