Change Management

One of the most crucial, but typically under-considered and under-funded parts of a health IT implementation project is change management. Clinical systems implementations touch every part of the organization. Physicians are dramatically affected, as are the entire clinical staff. Additionally, operations personnel are affected as are finance, scheduling and of course technical support groups.

New clinical systems not only drive the need for extensive training, but often the roles of staff are affected significantly. People not only perform jobs differently, but often, they end up in different jobs with different classifications. Clinical Informaticists are now moving into the mainstream. Chief Medical Information Officers are gaining in popularity, particularly in larger organizations. Accordingly, effectively planning for change, managing the process, and reinforcing new roles and responsibilities is imperative for project success. Executive championing and involvement is crucial to reinforce the need for change as well as champion the change when the expected resistance surfaces.
